Women’s charity ‘in crisis’ after funding plummets by more than half in two years

A women’s charity could be in danger of closing in the near future because its funding has plummeted, according to its chairman.

Bushra Tahir’s organisation Awaaz has seen its income drop by between 60 and 70 per cent in two years.

She said: “We are trying to do the fundraising to keep this group going, but it is in crisis.”

Awaaz, which has been running for more than 10 years, advises women on a range of issues including domestic violence, HIV and mental health.

But the organisation relies on donations and volunteers.

Mrs Tahir said: “We strongly believe in fundraising ourselves to keep going – we don’t get funding from anywhere. It is difficult because everybody is really tight on their pockets.”

The charity, which hopes to expand services such as its domestic violence sessions if its finances improve, plans to hold a variety of events to raise money, including a dinner dance.

It is also looking to create a forum where people can donate.

One area in which Awaaz is settled is in its home. The charity was based at the Loxford Polyclinic for five years, but has now moved to the Loxford Children’s Centre, in Ilford Lane.

Its services will launch at the site on Wednesday.

Mrs Tahir said: “We are grateful to the children’s centre for accommodating us and I would like to say thank you. We hope we can continue our work to make Redbridge a safer and happier place.”

For information on the charity or to donate, visit awaaz.org.uk.
