Witnesses to the assault, which left the woman with cuts to the side of the head, are being urged to come forward by Redbridge Police.

At approximately 8.15pm on February 17 in the King George Avenue car park, in Newbury Park, the woman was approached from behind and struck over the head after she took her shopping to her car.

The woman said she felt a sharp pain and did not lose consciousness but knew that her head was bleeding.

None of the victim’s possessions were stolen and the suspect did not speak to her at any stage.

“Robbery doesn’t seem to be the motive to it, which raises our concern,” said Det Ch Insp Stewart Hill.

“We are treating this very seriously.”

A building brick with specks of blood on it was found in Sainsbury’s car park after the attack.

It is not known whether it was the weapon used.

Anyone who has new information or witnessed the attack is urged to contact police on 101.
