Wanstead church joins the Recorder in helping our Christmas appeal charity

“They come with the clothes that they’re wearing and virtually nothing else” is why a church is supporting a charity for refugees this Christmas.

Rev Liz Horwell, from Christ Church, Wanstead Place, Wanstead, will be accepting donations at her church services for the Refugee and Migrant Forum of East London (RAMFEL).

The charity desperately need coats, shoes and non-perishable food for some of the most destitute people in Redbridge.

The cause has been chosen as the Ilford Recorder’s Christmas appeal.

Ms Horwell said: “These people come into our country very frightened and very alone. They come with the clothes that they are wearing and virtually nothing else. It’s up to us to welcome them.”

RAMFEL, in High Road, Ilford, provide food parcels, clothes and legal aid to anyone regardless of their circumstances in life.

Ms Horwell said: “Often we are so blessed with what God gives us and he calls us to support those who are the most vulnerable.”

The church will be accepting donations up until Christmas, but the reverend is keen to stress that charity should not only be performed over the festive season.

“I think people remember at Christmas that there are others that are less well off but it’s important that we help charities at any time of the year,” Ms Horwell said.

Many of those using the service at RAMFEL are in need of warm coats and shoes for the winter. Ms Horwell added: “These are people who are so much more in need than we are; if you have two coats then we should hand one on.”

The church chose to support the charity as it helps the community and gives aid to people who have nowhere else to turn and was well-received by the congregation.

“It’s a very popular choice because they feel that they can actually offer something,” said Ms Horwell. “People bring toys and wrap them up so it’s nice for the children.”

Services are 5.30pm Saturdays and 8am and 9.30am Sundays.
