The new centenarian is Mrs Laura Hayward, of Wanstead, who held a party at the Eagle Lodge, Snaresbrook Road.

The deputy Mayor Cllr Linda Huggett joined Mrs Hayward, her son Mr Eric Hayward and her friends to cut cake and sing songs at the retirement home.

The 100-year-old, who is known to her family as “Cis”, has lived through both World Wars after being born on the outset of the First World War in 1914.

Mrs Hayward’s only child, 68-year-old Eric, said: “She’s the youngest 100-year-old I’ve met, she’s 100-years-old going on 65.”

The 100-year-old bingo-goer left school at 15-years-old to become a court dressmaker, later marrying her late husband Percy Hayward, of Hackney, in 1937.

Mrs Hayward, who revealed how she stayed healthy over the years, said: “I went exercise classes since, well, for 30 odd years, that’s one of the things that’s kept me going, and I have always eaten good food.”

During the Second World War, the Camberwell-born centenarian worked in the Army’s pay offices in Leicester and London.

Her son Eric said: “The thing she’s most proud of is that she didn’t ask for presents, she asked for donations to the British Heart Foundation.”

Mrs Hayward explained why she wanted to donate the BHF, she said: “My husband had a heart attack and my mother died of a heart attack too.”
