Footage has emerged showing the dramatic moments several cyclists crashed as the Tour de France pelted down Woodford New Road yesterday afternoon.

One of the riders involved, 2010 Tour-winner Andy Schleck, pulled out of the rest of the contest today, tweeting: “Very disappointed to let you know that I will not be able to start.

“My knee is too damaged from the crash. This is a huge blow for me.”

A cyclist is thought to have fallen after colliding with a spectator taking photos, who is seen towards of the end of the video being helped on the kerb by other onlookers.

Some reports described the rider as being Mr Schleck, but witness Lauraine Colthart , whose son Oliver shot the video, said he seemed to come off a few lengths before.

The footage, filmed from not far from pub the Napier Arms, shows the world-class cyclists riding as part of a bunched-up group.

As the rear of the peleton passes the camera, the pack slows down significantly, one falls and several others can be seen re-mounting their bikes.

Drama then ensues as team mechanics rush to offer help to affected riders.
