The event was at the vihara, the Buddhist monastery, in Balfour Road, Ilford, last month under the guidance of the Venerable Rev Pethigamuwe Hemaratana Thero, head of the vihara, with a large gathering of devotees.

The events of the day included administering of eight precepts, dhamma sermons by venerable monks, Buddha pooja, dhamma discussion, meditation, Vesak bhakthi gee - devotional songs for Lord Buddha, providing food for all attendees and lighting of Vesak lanterns and displaying of Vesak Pandol.

A spokesman said: “It was a very successful event which celebrates the birth, enlightenment and the passing away of the Lord Buddha.

“The Vesak celebrations are held annually on the full moon day of May.”
