Some types of the bacteria can cause potentially fatal Legionnaire’s disease.

Pupils were sent home from Seven Kings High School, in Ley Street, due to a “water supply problem” this morning.

A letter on the school’s website said a “problem with the water supply” had stopped hot water and toilet facilities working.

A Redbridge Council spokesman later said Legionella were found during routine tests in parts of the water system.

He added: “Legionella bacteria are commonly found in water systems and are considered to be low risk when managed correctly.

“There are tried and tested methods to deal with the bacteria and these have been put in place at the school.

“The affected parts of the water system are now being treated and a rigorous programme of monitoring will continue to be implemented.”

Temporary water boilers have been fitted today to allow the school to open tomorrow as usual.
