A row has broken out between councillors over a proposed U-turn ban, causing uproar amongst residents and leading hundreds of them to sign a petition for it to be stopped.

Conservative councillors have proposed that the manoeuvre in Clayhall Avenue, Barkingside, be outlawed as they class it as “dangerous”.

But residents in Woodford Green and South Woodford are outraged.

They claim that their journeys will be disturbed and extended if the proposed ban is imposed.

Lesa Skelt, of Kensington Drive, Woodford Green, said: “I use that U-turn everyday – it’s a big part of my life.”

She added: “If they do ban it, I will seriously consider moving my child to a different school in September so I can avoid the road altogether”.

Cllr Alan Weinberg, of Clayhall ward, said: “Clayhall residents’ safety is far more important than convenience.

“It’s got to happen and it is ridiculous and irresponsible if it doesn’t.” Fellow Clayhall Cllr Robert Cole described it as “the cause of a lot of chaos”.

Deputy council leader and Roding Cllr Ian Bond, disagreed.

He said: “There is no real evidence showing it is dangerous and I think that the chances of anyone getting seriously hurt I think are very slim.”

Redbridge Council previously tried to put forward the ban in 2011, fining drivers if they used the turning.

Now a petition has been set up to stop the ban, which has already received more than 400 signatures.

The current sign in place in the road relates to the service shops in Claybury Broadway where U-turns have always been banned.

Reverend Alan Bolding of St Paul’s Church Woodford Bridge, in Cross Road, Woodford Green, said: “A simple solution is to do away with the lights and put a roundabout there instead.

“This would solve all of our problems.”

The issue will go to area committees 3 and 4 in a few months’ time.
