A festive flock of four-year-olds clad in tiny Santa hats, and even an elf costume, made Christmas a little bit more special for residents at a dementia care home.

Armed with handmade cards and tree decorations, the nursery school children visited the Chadwell House Residential Care Home.

The children had spent days perfecting their carol performance ready to entertain the 40 residents, many of whom do not have family.

Saudaa Nadat, deputy manager of the Furze Nursery, Farrance Road, Chadwell Heath, said the children loved talking to residents and telling them what they wanted for Christmas.

Miss Nadat said: “We are very much into the local community so we try to build links and to give something back.

“Lots of the elderly people don’t have families so we wanted to go there and give them something to make Christmas more special.”

Ten children visited the care home in Chadwell Heath Lane, Chadwell Heath, and, after singing carols and reciting some Christmas nursery rhymes, they sat to talk with residents – in the spirit of the Recorder’s Good Neighbours campaign.

Miss Nadat said: “It was very positive. The residents absolutely loved the children and asked us to come back.

“The children loved it too. Some of us are more fortunate than other people.”

Chris Gamons, manager of the home, said that although the residents have dementia, they have good long-term memories and the visits from the children remind them of their own childhood.

Mrs Gamons said: “It’s about sharing goodwill. It’s nice for the residents to see the children.

“It was lovely and after they sang they all went and spent time with everyone.

“Christmas is really about children and they can remember when their own children were small.”

The visit was deemed so successful that the children are going to go back for Valentine’s Day and Easter to meet the residents again.
