The Havering Music Makers are kicking off the year with the operetta The Mikado, their first production of the show in 30 years, at the Kenneth More Theatre, Oakfield Road, Ilford.

It is more than 125 years since the initial record-breaking run of The Mikado, a comic masterpiece which includes a number of popular songs, such as A Wand’ring Minstrel I and Tit Willow.

Christine Brown, 35, of Brentwood, who will take on the role of Pitti Sing, said: “We haven’t performed The Mikado in such a long time and we are enjoying the challenge as it is one of the less well know productions.

“The group is going back to its roots with classic Gilbert and Sullivan. Hopefully the audience will be humming some of the songs when they leave.”

Christine, who joined the group in 1997, added: “The story is a complex one with lots of twists. The audience can expect amazing costumes, great comedy moments, lots of good fun and a happy ending.”

Christine, who describes her character as “cheeky, fun and a little bit flirtatious” while being braver than her peers, will feature in the most well know song, Three Little Maids.

Havering Music Makers have built up a reputation for producing top quality shows for more than 35 years.

Chairman Nick Ford said: “We hope our existing audiences will make the short trip to Ilford and we see some brand new faces out there too.”

So join in a world full of ridiculous laws and prohibitions, outrageous political corruption and hilarious romantic entanglements from tonight (Thursday) until Saturday.
