He is better known for cooking with beer, but a TV chef showed Ilford the art of using leftovers to be creative in the kitchen yesterday.

Richard Fox, the author of The Food and Beer Cook Book who went on a brewing tour with friend and actor Neil Morrissey for ITV in 2010, shared his secrets in Ilford town centre.

He was supporting the national Love Food, Hate Waste campaign along with charity Waste Watch and Redbridge Council, and demonstrated how to use extra tortilla wraps and squashy tomatoes to make a mouth-watering pizza.

Other ingredients saved from the waste bin included leftover broccoli used in a biryani, the ends of a block of cheddar which made cheesy flatbreads and wilting salad leaves transformed into a pesto sauce.

Waste Watch team leader Sarah Mills said: “With a bit of planning, some easy tricks and a bit of experimenting we can all love food and hate waste at home, and save ourselves up to £600 a year.”

The chef, who has a range of beers with Men Behaving Badly star Morrissey, has written a book called How to be an Everyday Kitchen Magician, with further cost-saving cooking tips.
