Children at a South Woodford school have raised more than £200 for a guide dogs charity after seeing the vital work the animals do.

Snaresbrook Preparatory School, in Woodford Road, had a visit from Tony Sharp, who is partially-sighted and relies on Labrador Gibbs.

Mr Sharp, of Hainault, answered questions about his everyday life and Gibbs wowed the pupils by showing them how he guides Mr Sharp and warns him of danger.

After the visit, the school pledged to support Guide Dogs UK, which breeds and trains dogs for people who are blind and partially-sighted.

They raised £236 with a special film screening on Friday.

Headteacher Christopher Curl said: “The children were fascinated by Gibbs and the amount of hard-work required to train a guide dog.

“We were extremely grateful that Mr Sharp was able to speak to the pupils about his life and daily challenges and how he is able to overcome them.”

Rob Harris, engagement manager for Guide Dogs in London, said support from Snaresbrook Preparatory School and other events keep the charity running.
