Seven temporary classrooms installed in Redbridge since 2010

Seven temporary classrooms, costing £70,000, have been installed by the council to cope with the demand for school places since September 2010.

With the birth rate rising quicker than anytime since the 1950s, the need for more classrooms is currently huge.

However, Redbridge Council believes it is coping with the extra demand after providing 5,985 primary school places and 1,950 secondary school spots since September 2006.

Temporary classrooms, the council says, are “not seen as a long-term method of dealing with additional demand on school places”, though.

A council spokesman said: “While temporary classrooms have been occasionally necessary to ensure that we offer children places at our well-performing schools, we have invested millions of pounds into permanent measures to increase school places in Redbridge.”

The cost of temporary classrooms goes to groundworks, installation, services, furniture and information and communications technology.
