A leading figure in the borough’s Sikh community has received a prize for her tireless voluntary work.

Parminder Kaur Kondral was announced as the winner of this year’s Redbridge Asian Women’s Achievement Award at an education and training fair at Redbridge Town Hall.

She was chosen for her services to the community.

Parminder, 68, who lives in Gants Hill, said: “I just couldn’t believe it. I felt like I couldn’t say any words. It was fantastic.

“I had secretly been told before because I had to make myself available, but I had no idea I had been nominated. My husband [Sajit Singh Kondral, 69] took the day off and didn’t tell me, so that was also a surprise.”

Parminder, who has lived in Redbridge for 40 years, was nominated by former councillor Balvinder Kaur Saund, the chairman of the Sikh Women’s Alliance which Parminder works for as a secretary.

Mother to Kuljit Singh, 27, Manvir Kaur Sehmbi, 25, and Paramvir Singh, 23, Parminder is a former civil servant who does various unpaid work.

She is a volunteer Sikh chaplain at King George Hospital, in Goodmayes, and a bank chaplain and spiritual care adviser with North East London NHS Foundation Trust (NELFT).

She also works with the University of East London through her role in the Sikh Women’s Alliance and was a games maker at the Aquatics Centre during the London 2012 Olympics.

Parminder said: “I think there are so many other woman who are capable of winning the award, but haven’t shown themselves or somebody has not nominated them.

“This has given me more strength to do extra work now.”
