Two residents had to be dramatically rescued down a nine metre ladder, as a fire gutted a block of flats in Wanstead this morning.

Another 25 people were led to safety during the blaze at a maisonette in Queenswood Gardens.

Six fire engines and 35 firefighters were called at 1.13am.

Part of a maisonette on the second and third floor of the block was alight.

The brave firefighters rescued the residents, and it took them three hours until the fire was under control.

Maria Rose, 23, arrived home in a cab as the fire was going on.

“You couldn’t pull in, it was really crowded, swarming with police,” she told the Recorder.

“It was a mess lots of people were coming outside in pyjamas.”

Crews from across east London were called.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
