“Surprised” and “pleased” was how the chief executive of the Ilford Recorder’s Christmas appeal charity described her reaction to readers’ donations received so far.

This year we have chosen the Refugee and Migrant Forum of East London (RAMFEL) to support.

Rita Chadha, of the charity in High Road, Ilford, said: “I’ve been very surprised and very pleased by people’s generosity and the fact that they are willing to help refugees and asylum seekers.”

Anyone can turn up at the centre regardless of background and receive help whether they are in need of food or legal advice.

Ms Chadha said: “People realise there’s a huge back log and most of the guys we see cannot do anything until the government makes a decision on their case. People are starting to realise it’s not how they see it in the press.”

We are appealing for non perishable food items, winter coats and shoes.

Anything you can spare would be greatly appreciated.

You can bring items in to the Recorder’s office at 539 High Road, Ilford, IG1 1UD and say hello while you’re here.

Donations can also be taken to RAMFEL in the Cardinal Heenan Centre, High Road, Ilford, IG1 1QP.
