Volunteers at Victim Support were awarded certificates for their hard work as part of National Volunteer Week, which ended on Thursday.

The certificates were presented by the Fire Brigade’s borough commander Steve Brown.

He said: “The work that they do is absolutely vital and it was an honour to be asked to the presentation. They help victims and witnesses get through difficult experiences by providing a professionally trained person to listen and support those in need.”

Last month the north east area office, which covers Redbridge, received 950 referrals from the police alone. It offers practical and emotional support.

Sheila Jarret, from Victim Support, said: “I’m very proud of the volunteers, some of whom have been with us for more than 20 years.

“The service is free and confidential and even if you do not report a crime you can still speak to us.”

If you would like to volunteer or have been a victim or witness to a crime, call 020 8550 2410 or visit www.victimsupport.org.uk.
