The move comes after the national broadcaster found a “disproportionate” amount of its coverage focused on Christianity.

Balvinder Saund, of Chadwell Heath, chairwoman of the Sikh Women’s Alliance, said she hopes this will lead to equal coverage of all religions.

“It’s a great idea,” she said.

“What often happens is that the three Abrahamic religions are featured more.

“I think it’s great as long as all religions are covered.”

A BBC spokesman said: “Faith is remarkably important.

“The BBC can and must do more to ensure that the important role faith plays is recognised and reflected in our programming.

‘The BBC will do more to represent faiths across the broad, and has specifically rejected the notion of in any way diminishing what it does around Christianity.”

Mankamal Singh, advisor to The Sikh Network, said the announcement was a step in the right direction.

“I think it is getting better,” he said.

“I have already noticed a change actually. Since September, I feel like there are more researchers getting in touch to ask for people from the Sikh community to be on TV.

“We need to see more work to improve it, but it’s a step in the right direction.”

Mr Singh said he was pleased to see a BBC One show about Ravi Singh, a charity worker who travels the world to provide aid, broadcast on Sunday evening.

He said: “That was really great to see. We need more mainstream stuff but iPlayer means that people can watch it whenever they want anyway. It was great to turn the telly on and see that show.”
