Redbridge’s new mayor has urged people to put forward their nominations for the Young Citizen Awards.

In his role, Cllr Ashley Kissin gets the chance to meet people of all ages and from all walks of life.

But the father of two, and grandfather of three, said he believed it was vital to support young people in our community, and recognise them for their hard work and dedication.

The 63-year-old said: “The awards promote young people and help them get on in life.

“I meet lots of people, from all walks of life, different religions and different faiths, and it’s very enjoyable”

Cllr Kissin said it was important to recognise youngsters’ achievements in order to inspire others.

“Young people are our future. The awards encourage them to get involved in different things they might not have thought of,” he said.

“It’s good to highlight what they do and what they achieve.”

The awards, sponsored by the Exchange Ilford, were set up in 2008 by Eve Conway-Ghazi, of Redbridge Rotary Club, in conjunction with Recorder editor Chris Carter.

We are asking our readers to nominate their community heroes for our Young Citizen Awards – they could be friends, neighbours, relatives, students, colleagues.

We will tell their story in the Recorder, recognising them for their achievement, whether it be sporting prowess, academic success, personal courage or bravery, or dedicating their time and efforts to help others.

A monthly winner will be chosen by Eve and Chris, who will then be entered for the annual Young Citizen title, presented at the Mayor’s Community Awards next spring.

In February this year, former mayor Cllr Felicity Banks presented the accolade to inspirational Lucy Daldy, who had channeled the pain of suffering sexual abuse as a child into her work with the charity Step Up.
