Carers at the Crossroads AGM in Epping

A new survey, based on candid interviews with carers, has revealed many “couldn’t manage” on their own without the support from Crossroads Care.

Mother-of-two, Suzanne Mason, of Headley Drive, Gants Hill has cared for daughter Ellie, 30, since birth, but it was during her pregnancy with her son that Crossroads Care Redbridge, Epping and Harlow stepped in to help.

The charity, based in Charter Avenue, Newbury Park, held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Thursday in Epping, where a full time carer spoke about her experiences.

The meeting also highlighted the findings of the charity’s recent survey, which focused on carers’ personal stories.

Mrs Mason, who’s daughter has quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy, which effects all her internal organs, said: “We simply couldn’t manage to care for Ellie at home without the help from Crossroads Care. The carers are brilliant and over the years they have given me complete peace of mind.”

The first five years were a tremendous strain for Mrs Mason who coped with everything without outside support.

Social Services originally put Suzanne in touch with Crossroads Care when she was unable to lift and care for Ellie whilst pregnant.

She said: “The two carers that came were brilliant. They did their homework and really got to know and understand Ellie. She loves her Saturday evenings now when the carers take her to a pub or club, and this gives the rest of the family a break to do things together.

“In recent years Ellie has enjoyed performing in stage shows but without Crossroads support she would not have been able to pursue this interest.”

Chris Denton, an ambassador for the charity, said: “The meeting had a very special element when full-time family carer, Julie, was interviewed.

“Everyone felt that hearing first-hand what life entails for long-term carers, gave the meeting a human touch.”
