Redbridge Council clamping down on unlicensed landlords

PUBLISHED: 13:48 08 July 2014

A crackdown on unlicensed landlords is underway.

Redbridge Council is conducting an amnesty on HMO (house in multiple occupation) licensing.

Landlords who apply for a licence before August 31 will not face legal action, providing a licensing offence is not already being investigated.

However, an enforcement campaign will begin on September 1 to target those who have not come forward and they could face a £20,000 fine.

Properties which need a licence are those which have three or more floors and five or more occupants from two or more families who share facilities.

Cllr Muhammed Javed, cabinet member for housing, said: “Even though there is a shortage of housing in the borough, I believe it’s the right of everyone to live in a safe and secure accommodation.

“This licensing campaign shows the council are taking the issue seriously and acts as a warning to landlords who don’t comply.”

Steve Brown, the London Fire Brigade’s borough commander for Redbridge, said: “This HMO licensing campaign is another significant step by partners in Redbridge in the drive to provide safe and secure properties for local residents.”

Landlords can find out how to apply for a licence by calling 020 8708 4191 or visiting redbridge.gov.uk/hmo.
