A busy junction has been closed for two weeks while the National Grid investigates a “series of gas leaks” in the area.

The utilities company believes the issues have come from “escapes on the pipe joints” in Wellesley Road, Wanstead.

National Grid shut the street at the junction with Hermon Hill on October 10, initially stating the work would take four days, but has now said it may not finish by Friday.

Cllr Sue Nolan (Con, Snaresbrook) told the Recorder that several angry residents had got it touch with her about the road closure.

She said: “We are really at the behest of the utilities companies, they have a time limit but can go over if required.

“Residents who have been shut into their houses have spoken to me. These companies really are a law into themselves.”

The Tory councillor explained she had been assured by National Grid the work would be completed by Friday.

She continued: “It is frustrating and I do sympathise with residents, but with gas you cannot take any risks.”

Cllr Nolan added she had spoken to Redbridge Council’s Highways Department, and officers were monitoring the situation.

The council confirmed the investigation was over a “series of gas leaks” in the residential road.

A National Grid spokeswoman explained: “We have found a few escapes on pipe joints along Wellesley Road in Wanstead.

“The road will remain closed for a number of days whilst we carry out the repairs.

“Although this may cause some disruption to road users no one is off gas and we are trying to complete the work as quickly as possible.”

The spokeswoman added she expected the work would be finished by Friday, but this could not be confirmed by the time the Recorder went to press.
