This beautiful image of poppies in a meadow was taken by iwitness user Tony Webb.

The sight, in South Park, Ilford, is one of many residents will see this year as Redbridge Council commemorates the centenary of the First World War.

Poppies are being planted in a number of prominent places in the borough and wild flower meadows in parks and open spaces are being given an enriched poppy mix.

Redbridge mayor Cllr Ashley Kissin, who selected the British Legion as the charity to support during his year in office, said: “I think it is a wonderful idea that we have all these poppies around. After all, it is 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War and the poppy [as a remembrance symbol] came into being at the end of the war, so I am very happy to see it.”

The other sites are Goodmayes Park, Elmhurst Gardens, Roding Valley Park, Ray Park, Clayhall Park, Valentines Park and Redbridge Recreation Ground.

Schools can choose a poppy theme for their Redbridge in Bloom entries.
