Extra police patrols and security visits are continuing in Chadwell Heath to bring down burglary levels.

Last month officers revealed that “pretty much every street” in Chadwell ward had been burgled as a spike in the crime made it the worst area in London.

Worryingly, numbers were going up rather than down along with other parts of Redbridge.

Statistics given to councillors showed that from February last year to January, there were 211 domestic burglaries – up almost a third on the previous year.

A Redbridge Council spokesman said the safety communities partnership was “committed” to tackling the issue.

She added: “The council is working closely with Redbridge Neighbourhood Watch in the area, as well as across the borough, to promote Neighbourhood Watch and help residents to protect themselves and to spot suspicious activity.”

There has been an increase in police patrols and funding for registered landlords whose tenants are victims of burglary.

The money is used to secure homes with additional window and door locks.

A CCTV van is being used to gather intelligence and residents are being given UV pens to mark their property.

After burglaries, victims are given forensic property marking kits and immediate neighbours are given advice.

A spring clean of the area earlier this year aimed to improve its appearance to “reduce the possibility of crime”.
