The opening of the borough’s first voluntary-aided Muslim primary school may be pushed back a year, after a request from the charity in charge of the project.

The Al-Noor Foundation, which runs Al-Noor Independent Primary School, had hoped to open its new school in September 2017.

But now the charity has approached the council to delay the opening for another year, due to “changes to the building programme”.

Now Redbridge Council will discuss whether the delay will be granted at a cabinet meeting tomorrow night, at Redbridge Town Hall, in High Road, Ilford.

The school was granted planning permission in March this year, to relocate from its site in Green Lane, Goodmayes, in order for the school building to be demolished.

The temporary move to Newton Industrial Estate, Eastern Avenue, Chadwell Heath, will see a new building with “state-of-the-art” facilities built on the Green Lane site, and another adjacent site.

Cllr Elaine Norman, the cabinet member for children and young people, said: “The request for the opening of the school to change came from the foundation.

“These things can always take longer than expected.”

The school, which is being built in partnership with Redbridge Council, will become the borough’s first voluntary-aided Muslim primary school, with Christian, Jewish, Sikh and Hindu schools already operating.

The Al-Noor Foundation has been approached for comment.
