Council tenants and leaseholders on a Woodford Green estate could benefit from £11million to help save energy and money.

The multi-million pound proposal, backed by Redbridge Council’s cabinet on Tuesday, would see 617 homes in the tower blocks and maisonettes on the Orchard Estate receive energy-efficiency works funded by power companies through the government’s Community Energy-Saving Programme.

The improvements will include thermal cladding and window replacement to keep heat in and swapping a communal heating system with a modern system.

Costs

Cabinet member for housing Cllr Robin Turbefield said: “This proposal is really exciting and, if it goes ahead, will mean a reduction in energy costs for residents.

“I know that rising costs are a big concern and the bonus of this scheme is that it will cost the council very little but will deliver benefits for residents. But there is a lot of work to be done.”

The Orchard Estate has been identified as eligible and £400,000 has been put to one side from the housing revenue account for any extra costs, such as building repairs.

Cabinet agreed for the proposals to be explored at their meeting at Redbridge Town Hall, High Road, Ilford and a consultation will take place with residents as to whether the works go ahead.

An informal consultation has already begun and residents will be communicated with through workshops and advised on project timescales.

Deputy council leader Cllr Ian Bond said: “It is now a race against time to start and complete the work.

“We must also take into account the practical considerations for residents and someone on the site should be appointed to answer any questions they may have. This is a win- win situation for all.”

A member of the public also addressed cabinet about the lack of working CCTV on the Orchard Estate and it was agreed the matter would be looked into as soon as possible.
