Vulnerable Redbridge residents advised to get jab against ‘killer’ flu

Redbridge residents at risk of flu are urged to protect themselves with a free jab.

People aged 65 or over, pregnant women and anyone with health conditions including asthma, diabetes and chest or heart problems can get the jab for free from a GP.

Redbridge GP, Dr Hector Spiteri said flu is “not just a cold”.

He added: “It can be a really serious illness for some people and it doesn’t just affect older people.

“Flu can increase the risk of developing more serious illnesses such as bronchitis and pneumonia, and can make existing conditions much worse.

“In the most serious cases, seasonal flu might land you in hospital - it can even be a killer.”

The jab is also free of carers and frontline health and social care workers.

The vaccine only lasts for one year because it needs to be updated to combat the latest strains of flu.

Last year 75 per cent of over 64s in Redbridge got the jab but only 21 per cent of pregnant women used the free service.

Speak to your GP or local pharmacist, or visit www.nhs.uk/flu for information.
