Three lecturers from a college in Little Heath will be Games Maker volunteers.

Jenny Cass, Linda Frielich and Stephen Peacock, from Redbridge College, Barley Lane, will join thousands of volunteers at the Games. They were chosen from more than 240,000 applicants.

Jenny, a science and maths lecturer, will be among the action for events including boxing, judo and table tennis in her role as a Wayfinder at ExCel London. She said: “To play a part in the greatest sporting event on earth is simply a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity not to be missed. I feel tremendously proud to have been selected.”

Stephen, manager for sport studies, will be assisting boxing judges, timekeepers and referees at ExCeL. He said: “Being part of the London Olympics is going to be fantastic and I cannot wait to meet many people from around the world.”

Linda, an English lecturer at the college for more than 30 years, will be assisting press operations at the O2, which will be known as the North Greenwich Arena during the Games, where gymnastics, trampoline and basketball will be held.

Brick Lane Comedy Festival cancelled after opposition from community groups

A comedy festival in east London due to feature acts including Al Murray, Alan Davies and Ed Byrne has been cancelled because of “heavy opposition from local community groups”.
