Schoolchildren from Wells Primary School, in Barclay Oval, Woodford Green, were fortunate to catch a glimpse of the Grand Depart at Redbridge Central Library, in Clements Road, Ilford, ahead of this summer’s stage last week.

Chris Froome and co will charge through the borough on July 7 during stage three from Cambridge to London.

After passing through Epping Forest the route is scheduled to run through Redbridge and go past the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park before turning westwards along the Thames for a final sprint up the Mall to Buckingham Palace.

Cllr Joyce Ryan, cabinet member for culture and leisure, said: “Redbridge is delighted to play a part in one of the most celebrated and recognised global sporting events.

“We’re exceptionally happy to be able to have the Grand Depart trophy here for our students and residents to be able see and photograph.”

Cllr Ryan also added she hoped the trophy and the Tour encourages residents young and old to cycle.

More details, including a map of the route can be found at www.redbridge.gov.uk/tourdefrance
