Environmental stalls, political groups and a fire engine converted into a solar power generator were the highlights of a sunny Sunday afternoon at the Redbridge Green Fair.

Around 5,000 people attended the Valentines Park event, organisers said, where crowds enjoyed a strong community atmosphere and a variety of activities promoting green living.

Altogether 85 stalls were set up on Melbourne Fields not far from Valentines Mansion. One biking activity promoting Redbridge cycling clubs had crowds queuing all day.

One visitor, Ron Jeffries, 81, of Aldborough Hatch, said: “Craft stalls were highly popular and the many different foods available were an indication of the the diverse culture of Redbridge.

“All people mixed happily and joyously - a sure vindication of the rubbish being talked about Redbridge being an awful place to live.”

He added: “A great fun day for all the family. Congratulations to the organisers.”

Fair organiser Ros Southern added that, although fewer people came along than last year probably because of the raised £2 entry fee, the day went “wonderfully”.

“It went very, very well,” she said.

“It had the lovely community atmosphere it always has, a lively mix of cultures, lots of children - it was wonderful.”

Ms Southern also praised the “fantastic team of stewards” and stall holders who made the event possible.

Ahead of the fair, organisers clashed with Redbridge Council over its apparent reticence in promoting the event.

In a circular sent out by “Vision – Redbridge Culture and Leisure”, the council body omitted mention of the Green Fair taking place 800 yards away on the same day, but said that was because the message was intended for those signed up to receive information regarding Valentines Mansion, not the whole park.
