Delicious onions grown in a school’s newly developed wildlife garden have been gobbled up by pupils in their canteen – and now strawberries are on the menu.

Pupils at Cranbrook School, Mansfield Road, Ilford have been getting stuck in growing potatoes and onions.

The creation of the wildlife garden was spearheaded by Year 3 class teacher Chris Moynihan and his students.

What was a “patch of grass” just six months ago has become a thriving green space, with bamboos, flowers and a trio of curious ducks.

Prep school head Ben Mearhart said: “You don’t necessarily think of where food comes from but it’s an important thing to see, particularly for children.

“They absolutely love it. They’re so pleased to see how something they’ve done has turned out.”

The garden, which is divided into separate areas for outdoor learning, is in line to see strawberries springing up from the ground next as children at the school bolster their vegetable-growing portfolio.
