Many students were disappointed with marks that fell well below predictions on results day after grade boundaries were raised.

The AQA examination board will now re-mark all English Literature papers from Forest School, in Snaresbrook, for free.

The board decided the move was needed after reviewing individual exams.

The proportion of pupils who achieved A* grades has risen from 35 per cent on results day, to 37 per cent last week following the first re-mark.

A proportion of pupils receiving A* and A grades has also risen to 72 per cent.

Jonathan Mitchell, director of teaching and learning, said: “Our pupils have worked so hard and this is reflected in the fact that the most common GCSE grade across the board is the A* grade.”
