The Palmer Catholic Academy, in Aldborough Road South, is ranked in the top 10 per cent of schools nationwide for “adding value at GCSE”.

School network SSAT, formerly the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust, recognised the academy for helping pupils achieve GCSE grades beyond expectations.

SSAT chief executive Sue Williamson said: “The Palmer Catholic Academy should be congratulated for their stunning performance in adding value to their students’ achievements.

“The results are testament to the commitment and hard work of the students, teachers and leadership team at The Palmer Catholic Academy and a vindication of their belief in high expectations, good teaching and ambition for every young person.”

Head teacher Frank Maguire said the school had previously been above-average for grade improvements but was in the top 10 per cent for the first time.

He added: “This accolade is a wonderful way to end the academic year.

“A great partnership exists here at Palmer Catholic Academy between the staff, pupils and parents.

“This accolade is a reflection of that partnership it’s a testament to the hard work of pupils, parents, staff and governors.”
