Services at the Woodford War Memorial, Ilford War Memorial, Garden of Remembrance in Snaresbrook, Wanstead War Memorial, Wanstead War Memorial and Fairlop Waters marked the day.

Residents and dignitaries joined armed services personnel, cadets and volunteers to pay their respects to people killed in the First and Second World Wars as well as recent conflicts.

Around 1,000 people were stationed at Fairlop Waters when it was an allied air force base during the Second World War.

Veteran Harold Bennett was at the service on Sunday.

The 91-year-old former Spitfire pilot flew one of the first missions from the base and survived getting shot down and captured.

He said: “I think it’s good that people still come here to remember, it’s lovely to be able to do it.

“I didn’t think that people would be doing this 70 years ago.”

Full coverage of Remembrance Day in Redbridge will be in this week’s Recorder.
