Children from Oaks Park High School in Oaks Lane, Newbury Park, were at the official launch of the VeloPark on Wednesday.

Alongside Olympic champion Laura Trott and Paralympic champion Mark Colbourne, they were given specialist coaching on the mountain bike skills section, one of four cycling disciplines available at the venue in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in east London.

The park includes the iconic velodrome, remodelled Olympic BMX track, a one mile flood-lit road circuit and five miles of mountain biking trails.

It is open to cyclists of all abilities.

Shaun Dawson, chief executive of Lee Valley Regional Park Authority, said: “We are already booking in hundreds of schools, community groups, corporates and individuals.”

Public sessions begin on March 31.

There are women’s sessions, tasters for disability cycling and tandem rides for visually impaired people.
