Muslims are being encouraged to seek advice about fasting during Ramadan if they are pregnant, taking medication or suffer from chronic illness.

Anyone fasting can face dehydration, dizziness or other medical complications NHS North East London and the City (NELC) has said.

“We want people to observe Ramadan in a healthy way,” said the spokesman for NELC, which covers Redbridge.

“If you need help or advice with this, please speak to your midwife, nurse or GP. This is particularly important if you are pregnant or have diabetes.”

A special Keeping Healthy in Ramadan leaflet has been created on how to fast safely during long summer days and is available from mosque and hospitals.

Issues such as not taking medication due to being concerned about breaking your fast or taking extra doses later in the day, should be discusses with your doctor. The NHS has reported seeing an increase in health difficulties during Ramadan in patients who are fasting.
