Redbridge MPs vow never to forget the Holocaust ahead of memorial day

Redbridge MPs signed a book of commitment pledging to remember the Holocaust in the run-up to the memorial day tomorrow.

Lee Scott, MP for Ilford North, Mike Gapes, MP for Ilford South, and John Cryer, MP for Leyton and Wanstead, put their names to the document, placed in the House of Commons by the Holocaust Educational Trust.

The office of Iain Duncan Smith, MP for Chingford and Woodford Green, said he will be signing it this week.

The borough’s memorial service in Valentines Park, off Cranbrook Road, Ilford marks the day the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and death camps were liberated.

Mr Scott said: “If we forget what happened, then history will repeat itself.

“We must never allow it to happen again.”

In a speech to the Commons last Thursday, Mr Gapes praised the service.

He said: “[It] reflects the diversity of modern Britain, and it is an important part of learning about the past, so the errors of the past are not repeated in the future.”

The service, which starts at 11am, will include speeches from the daughter and granddaughter of a Holocaust survivor and a performance by a combined choir from the South West Essex & Settlement Reform Synagogue, Oaks Lane, Newbury Park and the Ilford United Synagogue, Beehive Lane, Ilford.
