Redbridge MPs have spoken out against a survey that found more than two thirds of MPs thought they were underpaid.

Only 100 members were questioned about their pay and pensions by YouGov, which claimed the sample was representative of the House of Commons.

Of those questioned, 69 per cent said they were underpaid and, on average, suggested MPs’ salary should be £86,251.

Conservative MPs chose the highest salaries, followed by Labour and the Liberal Democrats.

All MPs are paid a basic annual salary of £65,738, which can be topped up by extra responsibilities and expenses.

Ilford South MP Mike Gapes said he did not take part in the survey.

He added: “I don’t think MPs should get involved in discussing their own pay.

“It should be entirely set independently.”

Ilford North MP Lee Scott agreed.

The Conservative member added: “I’ve always said it should be set independently.

“I’m not unhappy with what I earn and I don’t claim expenses.”

Chingford and Woodford Green MP Iain Duncan Smith and Leyton and Wanstead MP John Cryer did not respond to the Recorder’s request for a comment.
