The leader of Redbridge Council has called for an independent councillor who is fighting to keep King George Hospital’s A&E unit open to use official channels for his campaign.

Independent Cllr Andy Walker asked the Redbridge cabinet to ensure there was greater transparency about the performance of the Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals Trust, during a cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

Although Cllr Keith Prince referred Cllr Walker’s points to the sub-committee meeting, he went on to advise the Chadwell ward councillor.

Speaking after Tuesday’s cabinet meeting, Cllr Prince (Con, Barkingside) said: “We do have the health scrutiny committee.

“Cllr Walker needs to direct his efforts through that. This is the way to make things happen.”

But Cllr Prince did not stop there. He then made reference to Cllr Walker’s departure from the Redbridge Labour group in May.

He added: “It is interesting that Cllr Walker got thrown out the Labour party for running cross-party campaigns.”
