Monica Nahar, 18, from Mayfield School, was called out of the blue by Southampton University after receiving an A* in biology and As in chemistry and psychology.

At the time of the call, she was revising for the UKCAT exam - a medical exam she would have had to sit in order to reapply for medicine courses.

Monica said: “They initially rejected me, but put me on a waiting list so that if there were any available places left on the course they would let me know.

“A few weeks ago, they told me all the students who were given an offer had confirmed their places at the university and I’d no longer really have a chance to get in, unless a student had dropped out.

“But while revising for the exam I got the phone call, where the admissions officer congratulated me on my grades and asked whether I wanted to study medicine at Southampton!”

Monica’s change of plans means she will no longer be able to embark upon her gap year, which she was hoping to spend working in Cambodia.

But she is excited to have been given the opportunity to pursue her dream career.

“The UCAS process was a huge rollercoaster of emotions - at first, seeing my rejections, there were tears of sadness, but finally being accepted I was crying because of the joy.

“I feel relieved and grateful that I have been given the chance to pursue my ambition. And maybe one day in the future I’ll be able to go to Cambodia to do some voluntary work as a qualified doctor.”
