Students tried their hand at an unusual sport in the build up to the Olympics, in the hope that it will encourage more youngsters to cycle to school.

The Bike Polo Tournament, featuring Year 7 and 8 pupils aged 11-13 from across three boroughs, including Redbridge, was featured as a demonstration sport at the 1908 London Olympic Games and is now a rapidly spreading urban sport.

The winners were presented with awards by Mike Mullen, a former BMX World Masterclass Champion last week at Redbridge Sports and Leisure Centre, Forest Road, Barkingside.

In order to help encourage cycling to school leading up to and after the London 2012 Olympics, the London boroughs of Barking Dagenham, Redbridge and Waltham Forest worked in partnership to organise the tournament.

The project was granted the Inspire mark by the London 2012 Inspire programme, which recognises innovative and exceptional projects that are directly inspired by the 2012 Games.
