Det Sgt Ann Dubois visited South Woodford Mosque, in Mulberry Way, to warn of the potential risks of “radicalisation” British men and women faced by travelling to fight in the war-torn country.

People who wanted to help the humanitarian effort were also told to do so by supporting well established UK charities, rather giving money through local mosques.

Dr Mohammed Fahim, of the South Woodford Mosque, South Woodford, who attended the meeting, said: “I admire New Scotland Yard and support it’s message fully - if you wish to give money give it to charities like UNICEF.”

Dr Fahim said he told Det Sgt Dubois to write to every mosque and the Muslim Council of Britain. “It is a very interesting topic,” he added.

The meeting comes ahead of a police awareness campaign on Syria set to be launched at the end of April.
