Parking will be free for half an hour everywhere in Redbridge from the start of September.

The news has been welcomed by drivers and businesses who have long complained that parking charges drive customers away.

Redbridge Council brought the change, which was originally proposed by the Labour group, into its annual budget last week.

It follows the “30 for 30” scheme rolled out last year lowering charges to 30p for half an hour on High Streets.

Cllr Keith Prince, leader of the council, said it would help “hard-pressed residents and businesses”.

The free period only applies to on-street pay and display parking and will cost the council an estimated £411,000 in the first year.

Shaz Dar, 42, from Catwalk Pets and Aquatics, believed parking charges were putting shoppers off Barkingside High Street.

“I was considering paying for my customers’ parking to try and get them back on the streets.

“That shows how desperate things were,” she said.

“I think the difference will be phenomenal – it will be an overdue celebration.”
