Today is the day many have been waiting for as the Olympic Torch is carried through the streets of Redbridge in what promises to be a memorable two-and-a-half hour relay.

Thirty-five people will get their hands on the golden Torch as it travels from Redbridge Cycling Centre in Forest Road, Hainault, to Ilford Lane, Ilford.

Luke Benjafield, 20, of Elmhurst Drive, South Woodford, will be the first to hold the Torch as it begins its journey at 7.19am after an invite-only ceremonial start at the cycling centre.

Early risers will have the chance to line the route or head for one of the viewing points to catch a glimpse of the Flame.

Rise and Shine is what the morning is being called by Redbridge Council, and the streets will be alive to the sound of song and dance as performers create a carnival atmosphere.

There will be tai chi at Fairlop Waters Country Park in Forest Road, Barkingside, as a torchbearer on a boat takes the Flame across the lake.

The Golden Years Dance Troupe will welcome the Flame to Valentines Mansion where it will stop for a short time before restarting its journey through the borough.

A samba band will entertain crowds in the pedestrianised part of Ilford Town Centre.

Bollywood dancers and dohl drummers will bid the Flame farewell as it makes its way along Ilford Lane before continuing its journey into Barking and Dagenham at about 9.50am, and then Havering and Bexley.

With Today marking just five days to go before the opening ceremony for London’s Games, thousands are expected to take to the streets to mark a historic moment for the borough.
