A former assistant head teacher’s decision to leave his post to set up a revolutionary new app has been vindicated after he won an award this week.

Naimish Gohil, 31, of Horns Road, Newbury Park, left his post at a school in Hammersmith in 2010 to launch an app to help students, teachers and parents with school work.

The tool called “Show My Homework” enables all three parties to be completely sure of what work has been set for pupils each day.

Mr Gohil and his team were recognised at BETT – former known at the British Educational Training and Technology awards show - on Wednesday at the ExCel arena for the app which is currently used by “500,000 students every day” at more than 400 schools.

Mr Gohil’s team won the BETT Award for Innovation in information communications technology (ICT).

Mr Gohil said: “It was incredible to win the award. It is David versus Goliath and it’s the Oscars of education – it is just incredible recognition.”

The app allows teachers need to be aware of homework set by other teachers, so students do not get overloaded.

Students need to be clear of their homework requirements and deadlines, too.

Parents are encouraged to be involved in the homework process so they have some idea about what their children are expected to do.

The “Show My Homework” founder added: “I was responsible for homework at this school and most of the teachers hated technology and only one or two of the teachers would use it.

“We saw that [the process] of homework has not changed in 100 years, so we created the app so the parents, the teachers and the kids know what each other is required to do.”

“I just realised I could go on being a teacher or I could go and develop this, and I decided to do this.”
