Redbridge commuters will be hit by 4 per cent fare rises for travelcards in the new year, although Boris Johnson insists prices have been “frozen in real terms”.

The price of a weekly zone one to four travelcard will go up from £43.60 to £45.40 - a rise of 4.1pc.

From January 2, pay as you go bus fares will rise 5p to £1.45, but one-day Oyster fare caps will not be changed.

All free and concessionary travel for young, elderly and disabled people has also been protected.

The average increase across London is 3.1pc, which matches the retail price index (RPI) instead of the usual RPI plus 1pc rise.

Mayor of London Mr Johnson said: “This package, which has been made possible by the continuing delivery of efficiencies across TfL, ensures that fares remain affordable and that we have the level of funding we need to continue to improve the network and deliver even better, more frequent services for everyone.”

But deputy Labour group leader Cllr Wes Streeting, said commuters were still being hit by an “inflation-busting increase”.

He added: “With rising housing costs and energy prices, many commuters in Redbridge can ill afford to pay even more to get to work.

“There is a cost of living crisis in outer London that the Tories aren’t taking seriously.”

All Redbridge overground and underground stations are in fare zone four, apart from Chadwell Heath in zone five.
