A man was rescued from a flat this morning after a fire broke out.

He was taken to hospital by air ambulance after being brought out of the Princes Road address, Barkingside, by London Fire Brigade crews.

Four engines from the Ilford, Hainault and Woodford stations attended with 21 firefighters and officers after being called to the scene at 8.39am.

The blaze, which damaged a large part of the ground floor of the property, was put out by 9.48am.

The cause is being investigated.
