A giant artwork that will open the “imagination and spirit” of people who see it has been erected in the heart of Ilford to mark the completion of two new tower blocks.

Pioneer’s Gate stands in the shadow of the Pioneer Point towers, Winston Way.

The 24ft artwork which towers over pedestrians and passing traffic is made of nine “reciprocally linked rectangular steel frames which nest and interesct each other”.

It creates a form that spirals, “inspiring a sense of change and development”.

The artwork is being dedicated to Janice, a lifelong Ilford resident who died at the former Pioneer Market – the site of the new Pioneer Point – as a result of schizophrenia.

Her sister Doris Villiers had contacted those behind the development in 2006, a conversation which led to the artwork dedication.

Pioneer’s Gate has been designed by artist Nils Folke Anderson, whose work has been exhibited from New York to London.

The artwork will “invite wonder and convey progress”, say those behind it.

Work on the two Pioneer Point towers has been completed.

All the apartments in the 25-storey South Building will be put on the market to buy, while the apartments inside the 35-storey North Building will be serviced apartments.
