Police said Lerone Boye, one of four men sentenced over the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Kelvin Chibueze in 2012, told officers his stint on the run had been the “best three months of his life” when he was found hiding under a bed in Chigwell on January 21.

He absconded from the John Howard Centre in Homerton last October.

On Wednesday, staff member 29-year-old Dean Ablakwa, of Bradmore Court, Enfield, was cleared at Snaresbrook Crown Court of conspiracy to assist an offender escape from lawful custody. Boye, 28, pleaded guilty to being unlawfully at large on July 8.

Det Insp Mark Lawson, of the Metropolitan Police’s homicide and major crime command, today said: “Boye is a violent murderer and his escape prompted a large-scale police operation with hundreds of enquiries carried out to locate him.

“He has shown no remorse for the distress he undoubtedly caused the family of Kelvin Chibueze by absconding and I am pleased he is back where he belongs - behind bars.”

Boye was jailed on December 20, 2012 for murder and on August 8, 2013 was transferred to the John Howard Centre in Kenworthy Road, Homerton, for assessment under the Mental Health Act, police said.

Ablakwa was employed there as a social therapist and worked on the medium-secure ward on which Boye was detained.

On October 16 2013, Ablakwa was asked to escort another patient to reception for approved unescorted community leave, Scotland Yard said.

He also took Boye from the ward at the same time without seeking permission or alerting more senior staff.

They went into an airlock area by the door where Boye appeared to bend down as the other patient legitimately signed himself out.

Boye then pushed the other patient to one side before making his escape.

Scotland Yard launched an investigation to find Boye and a £15,000 reward was offered. On January 21 2014, police found him under a bed at an address in Elderberry Close, Chigwell.

Mr Chibueze’s mum Tina Chibueze found out her son’s killer Boye had absconded when she saw an appeal on television.

Last October, she said: “It’s a slap in the face. He was looking at me when he was in the dock and laughed in my face when he got his sentence.

“I got a life sentence as well but there’s no minimum term. Is that justice for me?”
