Adedapo Adelekan, of Perth Road, mingled with Sir Trevor McDonald, rapper Wretch 32 and Olympic champion Christine Ohuruogu at the glitzy evening.

The Valentines High School student was nominated for the GCSE category in the London Schools and the Black Child Achievement Award.

He got an incredible A*s and four As in his GCSEs, some of which he took early.

Adedapo is now studying for A-levels in maths biology, chemistry and French.

He said: “It’s the first time I’ve been to anything like this, I’ve really enjoyed myself.

“I’m really proud and all the other nominees were really nice.”

Proud dad Ade Adelekan said it was good to celebrate academic excellence rather than “football or music”.

The awards, run by Hackey North and Stoke Newington MP Diane Abbott, aim to highlight the achievements of young black people.

Ms Abbott said: “It’s never been more appropriate to have these awards.

“After last year’s unrest, it’s important to remind us that for every one person who takes the wrong path, there are thousands of people trying their hardest to succeed.”
